LOCAL COMEDIAN HAS HIS AUDIENCES "FLIPPING" OUT

by Bonnie Rubin

At 22, Flip Schultz has a very impressive resume. This stand-up comedian has worekd at Uncle Funny's, Comedy Sportz, the Comedy Corner and even Shoney's. That's right-Shoney's, the restaurant with the all-you-can-eat breakfast and dinner buffets. "One of my mom's friends had a convention meeting there and needed entertainment," he says, laughing. "I literally played the salad bar!"

Flip is always ready to make someone laugh. He confesses he's always had a knack for entertaining people. At age eight, he won first place in a talent show doing stand-up comedy.

"I realized that I had a gift," Flip remembers. "I knew I was creative enough to do this."

Always recognized as the class clown, Flip graduated from Plantation High School in 1992, and now attends FAU as a theater major, graduating this May. If his name sounds familiar, you've probably seen him as the House MC for a few of the comedy nights at the Sports Rock Cafe.

Flip writes his own routines. He doesn't use props on stage; he relies on what he writes. "I'm very observant," he claims. "I'm also very physical on stage."

Flip likes to open his shows with impressions. He imitates the likes of Jay Leno, Jack Nicholson as the Joker from Batman and the ever popular Channel 7 News anchor Rick Sanchez, among others.

People say I'm like Jim Carrey," he exclaims proudly, "except I don't have his money."

At age 18, Flip won first place at an open mike night. "I won because the audience consisted of my family and it (the winner) was based on audience response," he jokes.

He also won the Seinfeld Stand-Up Comedy Challenge, held at Sawgrass Mills in 1995. Doing three minutes of his own stand-up routine, Flip beat about 17 other comics and won a trip to the Bahamas and a $500 shopping spree.

Despite his usual successes, Flip has had his share of bad experiences. He explains that heckling from the audience is very tough, especially if the comedian doesn't have a comedback. "When you bomb, you have nothing to feed off of," he says.

Flip Schultz will be performing at Uncle Funny's during the week of February 26, and the Comedy Corner from April 9 to April 13.

Check him out, after all, his business card states that "he'll tickle your funny bone...and other parts of your anatomy."
